What Pet Should I Get?
It seems Dr. Seuss recognized the quandary of choice long before Malcolm Gladwell and Jonah Lehrer started writing books about it. What Pet Should I Get? isn't just a brand new (i.e., newly published and previously unseen) Dr. Seuss picture book, but a book that tackles a common contemporary problem: too many damn choices and the big pile of indecision they create.
Discovered recently, and obviously posthumously, the manuscript and illustrations for What Pet Should I Get? were just compiled and released as a first edition on July 28, 2015. The story tracks a brother and sister's visit to a pet store and struggle to choose just one of the myriad furry, scaly, feathered, and sometimes mythical friends they meet. Life lesson: it's hard to make up your mind, but you if you don't suck it up and do it, you'll end up with nothing.
At the end of What Pet Should I Get? an editor's note provides the full rundown of Dr. Seuss' own pets, his creative process, and the belated discovery of the of the Pet pages.
