I figured Phallacy: Life Lessons from the Animal Penis was a piece of humor writing, released for use as a gag gift, or a coffee table book selected specifically to make my in-laws uncomfortable when they come over. But that's just one of the many fallacies author Emily Willingham reveals in Phallacy, which she has crafted into a legitimate biological exploration of penises in nature, with evidence and commentary on how the dominate - or rather, don't dominate - the animal kingdom.
While Phallacy: Life Lessons from the Animal Penis does sprinkle wit and humor throughout its pages, the overarching message of the book seems to be that penis size and ownership is a human-manifested, not naturally occurring, indication of dominance, power, and masculinity. In other words, the penis doesn't make the man.
Using illustrations of unusual animal genitalia and descriptions of their mating rituals, Phallacy's ultimate goal is to show "where humans fit on the continuum from fun to fatal phalli and why the human penis is an implement for intimacy, not intimidation."
