Sneakers: Next Size Up
Milk's forthcoming Sneakers: Next Size Up is a 2-volume tome on sneaker culture begging for display on the shelves and coffee tables of sneakerheads.
Sneakerhead. Now that's a fun compound word for elementary school teachers to try to explain to their students. I remember learning about "toothbrush", "cowboy", "football", and, the outlier, "butterfly" when I was a kid. Miss Dunkelberg had to explain how even though she just told us compound words get made by combining 2 individual words that are so intertwined they work better together, butter doesn't really fly, and a fly isn't really made of butter. And we were like, "But it's still a compound word, even though it doesn't follow any of the rules of compound words?" And she was like, "Yes." And we were like, [Fist shakes all around] "Damn you, English language!"
Anyway, sneakerhead is one of those butterfly compound words, wherein it's two individual words put together, but sneakers don't have heads, and no heads...er, most heads...don't wear sneakers on them.
Anyway again, Sneakers: Next Size Up is a full-color review of the sneaker phenomenon, a collector's item nearly as enticing as the collector's-worthy editions of the footwear itself. The brand new volume includes commentary from sneaker freaks of the fashion, sports, design, art, and music worlds. Its companion volume is a reprint of Size Isn't Everything, originally released in 1998.
