Check It Out

Detect infrared "light" on your iPhone or Android with Seek, a thermal imaging camera that can identify objects' emissions in both daylight and the black of night. It's an affordable gadget for consumers to dink around with, or to apply to practical endeavors, such as personal security, heat loss measurements, cooking, and finding your friend Cornelius when he passes out drunk in the neighbor's gazebo at 3 a.m.

After capturing an image, Seek Thermal uses the data from over 32,000 thermal pixels to generate a picture on your smartphone screen. From 150' away the camera can assist in accurately identifying objects (or living things), from 250' it can recognize their thermal output, and from up to 1,000' it can detect that heat is/isn't being emitted. Specific examples include identifying a creeper skulking around your yard without leaving the house, checking how effective your "weather-sealed" windows truly are, and getting and instant internal temperature reading on the pork chops sizzling on the stove. Backroads drivers and hikers can even use a Seek Thermal camera to determine whether they are a football field away from hitting, or getting eaten by, a bear.

The Seek Thermal camera has a 36-degree field of view and a -40 degrees C to 330 degrees C thermal detection range. Its Apple compatibility has been optimized for iPhones 5, 6, and 6+, and iPod Touch 5th gen. Preferred Android models include the Samsung Galaxy S3 and up, Galaxy Note 2 and up, Motorola Moto X, and Motorola Moto G.
