This jar of Uranium Ore--or, as I like to call it, Instant Mutant Candy--contains real samples of NORM, Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials. Each container's label lists its contents' Counts Per Minute activity rate for radiation types alpha, beta, and gamma. In addition to turning your fingernails mint green, the Uranium Ore samples are useful in testing Geiger counters and serve as fun participants in nuclear experiments. Toss some in a pot with baking soda, add vinegar, and maybe it'll turn you into the next Flash. Or the next Man Without a Face.
Uranium Ore is shipped in a metal container, in compliance with Section 13 from part 40 of the NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules and regulations and Postal Service regulations specified in 49 CFR 173.421 for activity limits of low level radioactive materials. Whoa. That's a lot of official jargon that's going to make half the people who read it want to stay far away from Uranium Ore, and the other half want to order some immediately. For the record, vendor Images SI does specify that the samples are intended for educational and scientific use only. They also note that the license-exempt, low radioactivity sample sizes and CPM activity will vary from container to container.
