About Shinbudo Weapons Training Bokken

Bokken are traditional, usually katana-shaped training tools used in Japanese martial arts. Dennis King of Shinbudo Weapons makes all of them himself, by hand is his Corvallis shop. Corvallis is in Oregon, the capitol of recycling and being nice to people and trees, so King also carves his bokken out of resin-impregnated recycled paper products that emulate the qualities of exotic woods without harming the environment.

Shinbudo Bokkens are deemed training tools because their long, curved bodies have smooth edges and blunt ends that, upon impact, will presumably feel more like the nun rapping your knuckles than cutting them off. The 2 choices of bokken styles Shinbudo Weapons is offering up to our giveaway winner are the Traditional Bokken and the Shinbudo Bokken. Their differences lie largely in blade and point shapes, and overall heft. Each bokken measures approximately 39" long, but is available in 3 different thicknesses and handle lengths to accommodate varying hand sizes. King guarantees the balance, weight, feel, and overall quality of every weapon that leaves his shop.

The Traditional Bokken has a rounded blade as expected, but Shinbudo Weapons' material choice enables them to fabricate it thinner than a wood version wihout sacrificing durability and sturdiness. It is slightly more robust than the Shinbudo-style bokken, and recommended for fighters in the kumitachi, or other impact training, discipline.

The Shinbudo Bokken has beveled edges and a shape that more resembles a shinken. It is lighter than the Traditional style and recommended for suburi. Note that the Shinbudo Bokken does indicate a choice of "with bohi" or "without bohi" (a "bohi" is a blood groove) in its online store listing. Should Dude's giveaway winner choose a Shinbudo Bokken as his / her prize, the "with bohi" option will not be available.

In addition to your choice of handle thickness / size (Small, Medium, or Large) both bokken come with a choice of sori, or curve, style. The "Katana" version mimics the curvature of a shinkin at 1-1/2", and the "Aiki" has a more subtle 1/2" curve Shinbudo says should be better for those who practice Aikido.

Shinbudo bokken also come in a choice of 6 colors, samples of which can be viewed here.
