Grid Studio creates art honoring extinction that is itself on the verge of extinction. Their framed displays of disassembled old tech - namely iPhones, but also a few other Apple products, brands of early edition cell phones, and nostalgic gaming devices - rely on relics that are getting harder and harder to come by.
For example, the Grid Studio piece above lays out and labels the innards and outards of the OG iPhone. One-point-oh, released on June 29, 2007. How many of those are left in the world? And of the ones left, how many people are willing to part with them so Grid can turn them into "carefully arranged and attached decor masterpieces?"
I suppose new tech will continue to transition into old tech as the years go by, so there will always be something filled with circuit boards and motors and connectors for Grid Studio to break down and rearrange into nifty designs within natural wood shadow boxes. And they're not even the first to do it, or the first purveyor of disassembled old phone art to be featured here, so the supply must not be more than the demand just yet.
Still, if you want to own a specific piece of your yesteryears, you won't have too long to score a Grid 1. Or a Grid iPad (1st Generation), Grid Game Boy, or Grid Motorola RAZR V3. If you're hunting for a gift for a geek, or a gift for Dad - the two do seem to go hand in hand, don't they? - Grid Studio probably has some Disassembled Old Tech Art that will earn you a high-five and a corny thank you joke there too.
