Chick-A-Dee Smoke Detector
Historically, birds have been used to do a lot of man's dirty work. Roosters wake our lazy behinds up. Doves and carrier pigeons battle the elements to deliver our correspondences. Canaries sacrifice their lives alerting us to the presence of carbon monoxide in coal mines. And now this little white birdie will tweet, tweet a pleasing song about how our houses are about to burn down. The Chick-A-Dee Smoke Detector comes equipped with an 85-decibel alarm that, like any other clunky, unremarkable smoke detector, blares away at the first hint of a wire flaring, candle knocking over, or pan of burning Oh yeah, I forgot I got high and put a tube of Grands Biscuits in the oven.
Chick-A-Dee designer Louise van der Veld won first prize in her native Netherlands for her reimagined smoke detector design, which is admittedly far less ugly than traditional detection cylinders, and might even look somewhat pleasing hanging from the ceiling perched on its branch. Battery life is approximately 18 months, and the device comes with a 3-year warranty.
