The original Case Astronaut Knife M-1 blades traveled to the moon and back 9 times from 1968-1972. NASA commissioned them from W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company to stock the spacecraft for their Apollo program. For 2019, Case has released a tribute M-1, a reproduction of the original machete-style knife made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11's moon landing.

When NASA hired Case, they requested their onboard knife be lightweight, with both a sharp cutting edge and saw teeth on the back. The base of the Case Astronaut Knife M-1 was intended for prying items from terrain, and the handle, made of an ultra-light synthetic, was designed to withstand hard impacts without shattering. The knife also could emit no fumes so as not to contaminate spacecraft air purity.
Today's Case Astronaut Knife M-1 follows the same protocol, but probably won't serve the same uses. The blade is a 11 3/4" high carbon stainless steel and the handle a smooth white synthetic. Total length is 17" and weight 10.8 ounces.
The knife will arrive in a 2-piece box with a consecutive serial number on the blade.
