Awkward Plastic Grocery Bags - BYO or Get One of These

These awkward plastic bags from Vancouver's East West Market continue the trend of Canadian, and specifically British Columbian, ingenuity. The local grocery store specializes in organic and fair trade produce, so no surprise they are also environmentally conscious, and encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags. Those who forget, or refuse, receive a handled plastic carrier with one of these choice retailer names and logos printed on it:

  • The Colon Care Co-Op
  • Dr. Toew's Wart Ointment - Wholesale
  • Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium (hey, I'd feel proud to tote my bananas and Lucky Charms home in that one.)

While most people are simply chuckling at the quirky idea, some are taking to East West Market's Facebook page to Get! Angry! about the store having the gall to embarrass their customers in this way.

"Well that's one way to make sure these bags won't get reused!"

"Don't I see plastic produce bags for customers to use for the fruits and vegetables in one of the store's photos? Are those printed with embarrassing things too?!"

"You're shaming your customers, but it's the INDUSTRY's fault we use plastic in the first place!"

And on, and on. Whatever, dudes. Maybe you need to go to the Colon Care Co-Op to help you heal that butt hurt. I think it's good-natured fun. And also less of an enviro-crusade than an attention getter for East West Market, who is surely capitalizing off of all this embarrassing plastic grocery bag talk, and both the positive and negative attention they're getting 'round North America for doling them out.

Oh, and if you're wondering why I said the awkward plastic bags continue the trend of Canadian ingenuity, allow me to point you towards Vancouver and Kamloops, where BC's Bella Dolls are thriving. (And thrusting, and contorting....)
